Hints & Tips

PackingPacking and labeling cartons room by room makes unpacking much easier, and it helps when you are looking for a particular item.  Make certain you fill the carton to capacity as partially, full or bulging cartons may tip or collapse.  Use small cartons for heavy items such as books or tools so they are easier to handle.  Use larger boxes for light but bulky items, such as linen, clothes, etc.

Books - should be packed flat, not on their spines.

Appliances - such as refrigerators, freezers and other white goods should be thoroughly DRY and CLEAN before storing.  Whilst in storage ensure the door is secured slightly ajar and use a deodorizer inside to maintain freshness.  Don’t place items inside refrigerators or freezers as the shelves and linings can be easily marked or damaged.

Mirrors & Paintings - should be wrapped in bubble wrap and/or in a flat pack.  Store them on their edges in an upright position.

Furniture - empty the shelves and drawers before storing to protect the structure and shelves.  Dismantle furniture as much as possible to avoid damage and save space.  Vacuum lounges before storing to prevent attracting vermin.

Dishes & Glassware - use a layer of packing on the bottom and top of these goods.  Wrap each fragile item individually.  Stand plates, saucers, platters, casseroles on their edges but nest cups and bowls together.  To prevent anything moving around in transit fill in any spaces in the box with either packing paper or clothes.

What not to storeTV’s & Videos - the original boxes are the best way to transport these in but if you haven’t got them anymore, use plenty of bubble wrap and fill any gaps in the box with more packing, then use tape to seal the entire box.  Ensure you handle these boxes with care as the equipment is very delicate and sensitive.

Lawn Mowers & other Machinery - drain oil and fuel from all machinery to avoid damage and fire hazard.  It also reduces the risk of leakage, spillage and damage to other goods in your space.

What NOT to store - any goods that are illegal, stolen, inflammable, explosive, environmentally harmful, hazardous, perishable or that are a risk to the property of any person, eg acid, chlorine, paint and petrol.

Cancel - home deliveries, disconnect power and phone.  Redirect mail through Australia Post.  Notify change of address to businesses, friends and important authorities (electoral roll, etc.)
